Oxford – Day 4

Lux Aeterna, Morten Lauridsen

Tyler Weakland, Conductor

Today Daniel Hyde returned to talk with us about score study and rehearsal techniques. We also had a very interesting lecture by Stephen Darlington on the Eaton Choirbook. One of only 3 illuminated choir books to survive the reformation. We also sang several selections that have been transcribed from it.

Dr. Darlington is the Director of Music for the whole of the University of Oxford and was gracious to then take us inside the upper Sanctum of the Christ Church library. A place few people who aren’t fellows of the university ever see.

The librarian had laid out a few things for us to see. An illuminated manuscript from 1585, the oldest pknown surviving part books from the Tudor era, and many other treasures. Of course the room itself is amazing.
