Sunday July 6, 2014 – 11am Eucharist Service.
I was all psyched up for Choral Mass at St. Paul’s. Let me cut to the chase…it was a disappointing experience. The mass was Missa in C (KV 257) “Grosse Credomesse” by Mozart sung by the Cathedral Choir accompanied by the City of London Sinfonia. They were great and if it had been a concert I would have enjoyed it. What could possibly go wrong? Well instead of starting at 11:30 like the sign out front said, they start the orchestra services in July at 11. It’s on their website but since I looked on their gate, I didn’t think to check the web. So I showed up at 11:15 just as the sermon started. The sermon was hard to hear, the ushers talked through much of the service, the music was IMPOSSIBLE to sing to. No one in the back 1/3 of the congregation sang a note. The ushers practically got into a fight during communion. At one point one usher told a pew to go to communion then another came over and asked the lady why she was headed to communion. I thought she was going to cry. It was a mess!
I might go again sometime but only if I could sit in the front where the “real” congregation gets to sit.
